Before the pandemic, if a car manufacturer wanted auto journalists to review their latest offering, they loaded everybody onto Air Canada or Air France or Lufthansa and flew us off to Frankfurt or Lisbon or Salt Lake City and let us take the new car or light truck out to play.
Usually, the new vehicle would turn out to be tickety-boo. Rarely did we find a problem, even with the lowest-priced brands. The point is, we could drive the car and check it out and come to a conclusion.
These days, hardly anybody is travelling. Yes, some journalists are back on the planes, but I figure they either have a death wish or a bad marriage. Anything to get out of the house
But the manufactures still have to sell cars and the best way – one of the best ways, anyway – is to send those of us still at home everything you would ever want to know about the new car and let us use our expertise to pick out what’s best to tell you about.
So here we go. The car in question is the new 2022 Land Rover Range Rover. It looks great; I can hardly wait to see it in person. Interestingly, it is one of the best-looking cars I think I’ve ever seen.
Let’s remember: Land Rover started life as an off-road mud buggy. Up hill and down dale, that sort of thing. These days, we’re talking about a luxury vehicle that you can drive yourself or be chauffeured. In point form, then. here’s what you can look forward to: Forget leather. It’s so 2020. Now Land Rover is boasting about a new premium textile that combines Ultrafabrics and Kvadrat wool blend. This is about agribusiness and its effect on the environment.
Think about riding in an airplane. A combination of engine noise and wind speed means it’s loud out there. Inside the plane, though, it’s quite quiet. Land Rover engineers have gone to work and created next-generation noise cancelling with headrest speakers means it’s downright silent inside the car.
Standard all-wheel steering combines high-speed stability with low-speed maneuverability to create the smallest turning circle of any Land Rover SUV.
Flex-body architecture creates standard and long-body styles with four, five and seven-seat interiors. All four doors will be power assisted.
The now-usual safety technology is front-and-centre as are all the touch screens. There are more, of course, depending on the number of seats.
Built-in Amazon Alexa lets the driver ask for music (you can personalize your Sirius), navigation, and traffic updates and tells your oven to turn on the roast so it’s ready when you arrive home.
In addition to the standard inline six, a new twin-turbo V8 turns out 523 horsepower and can go from zero-100 kms in 4.6 seconds.
Land Rover is launching an all-electric battery model in 2024. The 434 hp plugin will go 100 kms before it will need to be recharged,
The pricing starts at $126,400 for the base model and tops off at $182,000. You can have one in your driveway in the spring of 2022, but if you want one, you’d better order one now.
