Peterhansel scores an incredible ninth Dakar

Stephane Peterhansel of France won his ninth Dakar Rally last weekend.

Peterhansel is one of the most successful drivers in the history of the race, winning it on two as well as four wheels.

He won the 16-day event from Lisbon through the Sahara desert to Senegal riding Yamaha motorcycles in 1991, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1997 and 1998 and then by driving Mitsubishi Pajero SUVs in 2004, 2005 and again this year.

Peterhansel reached the finish line (left) seven minutes ahead of second-place Luc Alphand of France, also driving a Mitsubishi. Jean-Louis Schlesser of France was third in a Renault.

NASCAR driver Robby Gordon finished eighth overall in a Hummer.

Next Sunday, the Outdoor Life Network will broadcast a three-hour Dakar Rally special, starting at 8 p.m.

More than 500 car, motorcycle and truck teams began this year’s event, which covered 7,900 km.

Only 310 vehicles finished.
